It is the last market to be held in the Community House for the year - the last market of the year will be held on the Windsor Reserve in Devonport as part of the Devonport Christmas Festival (note: there will be a smaller number of sellers at this market).

Meet the Seller - Renee from The Little White Box

Meet Renee from The Little White Box. I am a major fan of her stunning work and am building up a collection as we speak. I know you will love her work as you will love hearing about where it all began and some insights into Renee and her process!

What is your craft?

Ceramics and I’m a Ceramist who makes tableware from materials by the process of pottery. I’m not a ‘potter’ as they are craftspeople who shape clay on a wheel and then fire it. My pieces are made from moulds using a slip casting process so multiple can be made keeping the shape consistent. Once they come out of the mould, the ‘greenware’ is then fired to turn it into a porous bisque that is painted using a stamping process to ensure the uniformity of each design. They are then dipped into glaze and fired for a final time at 1160 degrees which ensure they become water tight vessels ready to use.

How did you get started creating?
I studied a bachelor of creative industries/visual arts and have been a secondary art and photography teacher for the past 10 years. When my little boy arrived I thought it was time to get back to being creative and threw caution to the wind and started The Little White Box last December so we are nearly one year old!

Where did your original inspiration come from?
I was 5 and drew a picture of 'Bambi' from a Walt Disney book and took it to show my Nana. I will never forget she said that I was an artist and I got that from my great grandmother. She showed me three oil paintings of stags hanging on her wall and from that day on I knew I was going to be creative. I think living in the UK for 10 years I was truly inspired by the the Victorian Potters of Stoke-on-Trent. I supposed I got caught up in this romantic notion of hand made craftsmanship, of skills that were learnt in yesteryear and set about crafting those skills myself.

What are you reading at the moment?
At the moment it would be my Yates Garden Guide for New Zealand was given to me as a birthday present. I’m new to gardening and it is just brilliant.

And what is your favourite food?
My mum’s homemade Monte Carlos - they are to die for a with a perfectly brewed cup of tea I’m in heaven (obviously drunk out of one of my country mugs)!!!!

Where do you get your online inspiration from?
Too hard to just mention a few. I had a look at my bookmarks and I have a folder called NZ Craft and a separate one called Inspiration. Between the two I have over 150 bookmarks. It goes without saying the internet is amazing and is an open source for inspiration (but then the library is too and there is nothing like thumbing through books and magazines!!)

Where did you come up with your business name?
The Little White Box is all about the notion of giving a gift, something unique and one-of-a-kind. Our logo is an optical illusion - you either see a hexagon or you see a box. That parallels the whole idea when you receive a gift and those first few seconds you open it - it’s what ever you want it to be. I also like the idea that a little white box is a blank canvas to do what ever you want. I hand paint each item so it means no two pieces are exactly the same, creating little artworks in themselves.

Meet Susanne from Rose Rouge. Susanne has been making, well, forever! Find out more about her and her special craftwork below.

Tell us what you do?
I combine my knowledge of sewing and embriodery to make a range of exquisite handmade gifts, for that very special someone in your life, that are uniquely crafted and cannot be purchased in stores.
I make silk ribbon and organza hand embriodered cushions. Rose and Lavender hand embriodered fragrance bags that soothe the senses and smell fantastic.
Lovingly decorated lavender hearts, designer aprons, minature embroidered velvet bags and jewellery pouches are some of my most popular gift selections.

How did you get started creating?
I have always had a passion to create something beautiful. When I was a child I would wait until the family went to bed and get mums sewing machine out and in the morning I had completed a fabulous garment to wear. My mother always gave me alot of support and was amazed at what I had created.
After returning from travelling in the US I gave up corporate life to have a family. My husband bought me a terrific sewing machine and an overlocker and I went to night sewing classes tolearn how to make the best use of them.
I found a real joy in the craft and love multi-tasking. I found watching TV was just idol time and therefore, I often work on my embriodery at night.
Instead of spending hours shopping for generic mass produced items that everyone has or can get, I spent my time inventing and creating one-off uniquely special gifts for the people close to me and my friends. As a hobby, I discovered that there was more joy in making these gifts for other people, who wished to delight their own friends with special gifts of love.

What inspires you?
My young daughter over the years has inspired me to make a lot of items that I never thought I could actually do. As a child, she does not see any boundaries and has challenged me to make all sorts of unusual things and in a very short timeframe. Mermaid tails, countless fancy dresses, teddy bears, ragdolls, wedding dresses made out of trash and so the list goes on.
Beautiful fabric has always inspired me and when I found that material was lacking something special, I started embriodering on it. Beautiful flowers also inspire me. And of course being surrounded by a lot of very talented people at the Devonport Craft Market is really inspiring and rewarding.

What is your favorite reading material?
Your Home and Garden, Vogue, and Creative Embriodery. Actually any craft books I can get my hands on at the Library.

Your favorite food?
High tea at The Brookview Tea House is one of my favourites. And summer fruits including mouthwatering strawberries.

What is your favorite online inspiration site, online shop or blog?
Trelise Cooper Fabric and Pretty Things has to be my favourite fabric store. www.trelisecooper.com
The Ribbon Rose is a treasure trove I regularly visit.

Where did the name Rose Rouge come from?
The name RoSe RouGe came from the fact that I just adore Roses and love all shades of the colour red. Coincidentally, the name contains both of my own initials - SG :)
As a result, you will find a lot of my gift range is embroidered with roses.

A newcomer to the market scene, we have been so impressed with the stylings and offerings from Ernie and Pears.

Tell us about what makes up the Ernie and Pears range?
It is a range of bits and bobs. I think I am still trying to find my way in the crafting world but my direction lends itself towards bespoke home decor. I use British inspired fabrics and driftwood Ernie and I collect.

How did you get started creating?
It was all thanks to Judith from Ruby Jude and Vicki from Petit Bebe Creations. I would religiously go to all the craft markets each weekend and have a lookie and dream of being a stall holder and each week they would encourage me to apply and just do it! So I did! Thanks ladies!

What inspires you?
I love the British crafting community, beach combing with Ernie, beautiful fabrics and linens, domestic blogs and the fact that if I try I can achieve.

So something about you.... tells us about your favorite book and favorite food?
My favorite book would be "Ten Sorry Tales by Mick Jackson - it is AMAZING! Short and outrageously sweet stories. It's in the Auckland Library.
And my favorite food.... well....Anything naughty!

Saskia has been creating hand cast crafted resin jewelry since 2005. See some of her lovely work and find out where it all began.

Where did you learn your craft?
I was introduced to the process at Art School in 2005, and then picked it up again last year for an exhibition, where I made jewellery that featured images from my paintings/prints on show. The jewellery was a hit, and I had a lot of spare resin so decided to make some more and it just expanded from there!
What inspires you?
Paper, colour, illustrations, papercraft, Hayao Miyazaki- Studio Ghibli films, Andy Warhol, Rosalie Gascoigne, design, flowers, stamps, coins and anything exciting I can stick in resin!

Tell us about your favorite book and food?
For the book - Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. (I just couldn't decide...) and for the food: Ginger Crunch, Sushi and mandarins mmmmmm

Where do you go for online inspiration?
Etsy - I Love browsing all the amazing art, clothing, vintage products and designs other amazing people are making!

Where did you come up with the name for your stall?
I wanted something simple that I could use to separate jewellery design from my other art work, but still keeping my name in the mix.

Meet Rose from Rose in Thorns. A long time crafter, Rose is a multi-talented artist and crafter whose primary craft is candle making.

Where did you learn your craft?
My mother is very crafty, so taught me a lot of different crafts when I was young.

What inspires you?
The resurgence of craft has been has been a great influence, with all the new craft fairs popping up, online marketplaces such as Felt, and the craft community as a whole, through reading blogs and meeting people. My philiosophy is to create things that are sustainable, beautiful and functional. So I am often inspired by the materials themselves, as I think of ways to repurpose them into something beautiful.

What is your favourite book?
I don't have a favourite book, I have read so many! At the moment I am re-reading Mary Poppins, they are a childhood classic, and as my mum always says, so much better than the movie.

And your favourite food?
I have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac disease, and can't eat gluten any more. So anytime I discover a gluten free version of something I have had to give up, I can get quite excited...

How did you come up with your stall name?
It was originally 'Rose among thorns' – a play on my name, and a reference to finding beauty in the unexpected – one instance being recycling old candles into beautiful new ones.

Meet Chrissie McKain from run.cutie Jewellery + Design who has been designing and making for... well... forever!

What is it that you create?
I like to craft in all different mediums... hand drawn and digital illustration, jewellery making, sewing, painting and graphic design. Right now I am most interested in turning my illustrations into wearable art jewellery and some secret kids 'stuff' that will be revealed soon!! "I have always been a 'creative' person with a passion for drawing and design. It helped to have a wonderfully creative mum who was always at hand to help with the next DIY project!

How did you get started creating?
I also completed a degree in Media Arts from WINTEC, Hamilton which gave me an opportunity to explore the arts, and develop my own style of design." Books, adventure, people and places.....but mostly its believing that its possible to make almost anything you desire. Sure, you will always be restricted by availability of supplies, money, time etc... but I find this the most rewarding challenge.

What are you inspired by?
The people who inspire me the most are those that have made their own way in the creative industry, finding new and innovative solutions to the challenges they face.

Tell us about you favourite book:
The Character Encyclopaedia, by Pictoplasma. Its a beautifully crafted book, with little vector characters stamped into its shiny black vinyl cover... I have a number of illustration books in my precious shelf at home, but this one trumps the lot!! And what about your favourite food?
Anything sweet, but mainly chocolate...
Chocolate cake, Chocolate muffins, Chocolate mousse, Chocolate milk, Chocolate ice cream, Chocolate yougurt, Chocolate.... you get the idea!
I think M&M's are the best creative chocolate. While sitting at the table with my notebook pondering all the new and exciting creations that are about to be made... it seams quite therapeutic to make (and eat) my little rainbow coloured m&m smiley faces"

Meet the Seller - Leanne from Feel at Home

Meet Leanne from Feel at Home. A maker of soaps and other scrumptious items for the last 5 years. Leanne is a regular at the Devonport Craft Market and we love to have her around. Learn all about what makes this lovely lady tick.

What do you make?
I make natural soaps, skin care, bath products, lotions, lip balm.... anything that goes on the skin - I make. I use only natural plant oils, only pure essential oils for fragrance, no artificial colours. I do my best to support other NZ businesses, I use only organically grown NZ Olive and Avocado Oils - and all of my products are strictly palm oil free.

How did you start creating?
Here in New Zealand, I began creating out of need. My son has allergies and had eczema and I was frustrated by the lack of choice offered, and so it began...
I must say, I am a comforts kinda girl, and love to feel like I am being pampered, and found that many natural products didn't satisfy my desire for the indulgent, and so that's the direction I have taken with my range.

What inspires you?
Beauty. Broad term, I know, but there is beauty EVERYWHERE! I love the beach, in all its moods, I love fresh flowers, I love how nature seems to know what we need, and then delivers! I will often take my camera out and get the close up lens on, I find when things get too much, or overwhelming, it helps to focus on something small and beautiful, a water droplet on a leaf, blossoms on a lemon tree... whatever. I often put those up on my Facebook Page... Then everyone nows I am having a rough day, and have taken time out to focus!

Tell us about your favourite book
That is such a hard question! I read ALL the TIME! Emotionally, one of my favorite books is "The Alchemist" which basically is a wonderful story of how often our treasure is right where we are, but we have to travel away from where we are to appreciate it... But what many people won't know is that I am a Sci-Fi Fantasy girl - no Romance novels for me, I loved Lord of the Rings, and will often read books under the pretense of making sure they are ok for my boys to read when actually I like reading them myself! Anything with Dragons is good for me! Ha!

And your favourite food?
That's the same as the book question! I eat ALL the TIME! I LOVE food! It will be my ultimate downfall! Fresh food... in season. I am a salty rather than a sweet person, I head for veggies before fruit and salt and vinegar chips before anything else! When I am good, I am very very good, and when I am bad I break open a bag of chips (and I won't share them) Cheese and crackers.... good re wine.... excuse me, I have to go and have a snack now!

Where do you find inspiration online?
It varies - often there will be links to something that appeals to me on Facebook and I will head over and check it out. There is SOOOOO much inspirational stuff out there to benefit from; and for on online shop I would have to say that (just quietly) I drool over Shoes of Prey - where you can create your own shoes! One day... I promise myself, I will do that! I love shoes!

Tell us how you came about your name "Feel at Home"?
It has always been my belief that confidence is one of the most attractive things a person can have, when someone is confident, they stand taller, smile more and somehow make people want to know them more! And Feeling at Home in your own skin, both in the physical sense and the emotional sense is the root of confidence. And being that I make beautiful things for the skin - I thought the name fit, that plus the fact that I work from home, seemed to be the right fit to me.

When you are not at the Devonport Craft Market where can we buy your lovely creations?
I work with the Hector Trust, so I can be found at North Shore Hospital and Greenlane Hospital on rotating Thursdays (check my website for the calendar) I also have online shopping both on my own website and on my Facebook Page. I am heading to the Spring Gift Fair this year, so look out for Lather and Lotion by feel at home in a shop near you later in the year! Fingers Crossed!

Meet Koyal from Koyal Kapilla NZ
Koyal has been bringing her beautiful creations to the Devonport Craft Market for most of the year and creating as Koyal Kapilla NZ for the last 7 years, since the birth of her first child.

Tell us a about what you create
Funky Knitwear with a touch of crochet. I love to knit, create different textures and mixing different yarns. I love to push the boundaries of "typical" knitted item and making it my own. If I can knit it, crochet it, or turn it into a piece of art or jewellery - it will be done.

When did you begin creating?
Since I can remember, I have been redesigning my clothing - much to my Mums horror. I then went to uni and got a Bachlor of Arts degree in Fashion Design specilising in Knitwear and Computer Aided Design. From there I worked for well known knitwear companies for a while. I decided to be a Mum as well as work from home working on my own label. It is wonderful to be able to drop and pick up your children from kindy and school as well as be a designer. I have named my manniquinns as well as my knitting machine and our crazy cat called "Crumble Cat Rigg" who keeps me company when the boys are at school.

What inspires you?
Art, colours, nz yarns, textures, books and most importantly, people. Expecially my best friend Niki from Odd One Out. I love watching her paint her plates and what she comes up with next. It is very inspiring. It is so much fun for us to go to craft fairs and all the creative people there. We have so much talented people that do craft fairs every month and great to see and talk to them every month.

A little about you - tell us about your favourite book and food
Book(s): I am a sucker for vintage romances and this one called "Kingdonm of Dreams" by Judith MacNought. I also love Richard North Patterson - he is so dark and disturbing as well as creating great an amazing web of characters. I especially love his series that he did called The final Judgement, Eyes of a Child and Degree of Guilt.

Food: Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding with rich Vanilla Ice Cream -yum yum yum.

Where do you look online for inspiration?
I love Etsy - its like a whole new planet with amazing work. Very inspiring. I also love Felt and Toggle. Great to purchase from your fellow crafters and support them.

When you are not at the Devonport Craft Market, where can we buy your creations?
In my FELT store, on Facebook and I sell my seconds and sale items on trademe.

Meet Nikki and Odd One Out in this Meet the Seller interview - make sure you read to the end to find out about Odd One Out's Meet the Seller special offer for this month!

What is your art or craft?

Odd One Out products are all based around the idea of up-cycling, they are made predominately from vintage and salvaged materials – meaning each item is original and one off. My range is ever expanding but at the moment includes; vintage plates with quirky hand painted illustrations, cushions and light shades made with retro fabric remnants and old woolen blankets. Re-invented jewellery using vintage and found pieces as well as kitsch photographs of vintage Japanese ornaments in brightly coloured ornate metal frames.

How did you start creating?
I have been making stuff since I can remember. Some of my favourite books as a kid were the ones that showed you how to make fantastic stuff out of junk around the house, needless to say my family suffered through years of presents made from margarine containers and cotton reels! Not much has changed since then actually; I went to Art school and then studied Textile Design where I continued to be inspired by discarded objects and so called ‘junk’. After completing my Bachelor of design and then working as a commercial Textile Designer for 7 years I took some time out in 2009 to raise my little boy. During that time I realized that I absolutely had to be doing something creative or I’m just not that happy, so I began to go through some notebooks from my student days and rework some of my ideas – Odd One Out emerged!

Where did the name Odd One Out come from?

I can’t actually remember when I first thought of the name. Being a compulsive notebook sketcher and scribbler I have pages of drawings and lists of words and quotes that I love. When looking for inspiration I go back and trawl through these books – out popped Odd One Out one day at the perfect moment and voila. I love the shape that the words make when you write them, the letters are all flowing and the name seems to suit my work as it makes you think of something quirky and a bit different.

What inspires you?

I get inspiration from everywhere – I wouldn’t really say it was from one continuous source. I love to pick up books and magazines on random subjects (a tattoo magazine inspired my first range of plate designs), vintage shops and flea markets throw up some interesting finds which inspire new pieces and of course going to craft markets and talking with other fantastic crafters keeps me inspired and motivated.

What is your favorite book?

Having a two year old and trying to keep up with my orders doesn’t really allow me the chance to dig into a proper book at the moment. So I would have to say my favourite books are my little collection of ‘Edition Paumes’ interior design books. I love looking at all the inspiring pictures and I couldn’t read them even if I wanted to because the text is all in Japanese!

And your favourite food?

Its actually a food drink combo with special instructions, just to be difficult! For me nothing beats a cup of tea with a Chit Chat straw. You bite the ends off the Chit Chat and suck the tea up through it before shoving the lot in your mouth before it all falls apart. Sounds gross but it is heaven – believe me!

Where did you come up with your stall name?

I’m Belgian, moved here now 5 years ago and I speak Flemish which is dialect of Dutch. ` Mozaiek `in Dutch means mosaic . Because that is what I have been doing for as long as I can remember now ,even in my wearable art cause I consider every single item that I make a mosaic art piece. Bits and pieces of left-overs and recycled and new materials all brought together and turned into a one-off garment. So Moz-art ( Mosaicart) was born, and the fact that Mozart is European as well makes it even more alluring."

What is your craft?

I don’t 'box' myself in, you know, I do so many thing, but only things that I love doing. So maybe I guess mosaic in general is my craft and I extended it to all sort of medium ,I guess. I’ve been a window-dresser in Belgium for 15 years and that as well is kind of a mosaic. You start of with an empty box and fill it up with bits and pieces into something beautiful, into' eye candy'. But what I focus on now the most is creating one-off skirts and clothing and bags for women who want to show their strong energy, their happiness in wearing that color and fabric combination that defines them, that one-off created for that woman.

How did you start creating?

My grandfather was a tailor. He made suits and uniforms for the sailors and marines, he had a workshop on the riverside of Antwerp. I redesigned his old label(70yaers old) into the one that I’m using for my creations. And my mum was always creating and making clothes for me and my sister. Nobody ever taught me but chatting with my mum, even when I was a little girl, while she was creating, I think it just got stuck in my head from watching and it just comes out while I create. So no pattern thinking, just doing what I feel, what I love while I’m creating.

What inspires you?

Everyday life, that what surrounds me, colors, people, trees, nature, the ocean........, New Zealand...... And my walks....... I walk everyday through gorgeous bush and awesome beaches first thing in the morning before I start creating and it energizes my creative soul.......ideas, colors, combinations keep on rolling in on those walks and it keeps me going, keep me loving it more and more everyday

What is your favourite book?

As I’m so busy with creating and loving that I don’t find often the time to read a book...... But the book that changed my life is `The power of Now` by Eckhart Tolle.

It made me look at life in a different way and find my inner strength to believe in my power to do what I really love, to believe in the power of my soul..... and live the life that I’m living and loving so much.......so I guess that is definitely my favorite book.

And your favourite food?

That must be Italian. Being Belgian, being European ,that must be the only thing what I sometimes really miss here, is the real European food. I adore Italian food, could eat it everyday, the simpler the better. A real Italian pasta Napoletana: pasta, olive oil, the right herbs and real Italian tomatoes........mmmmmmmh brilliant.

Oh and real mozzarella, fresh basil and tomatoes.......yummmmm, real European bread......Yes, that is definitely the only thing here that I miss!

Meet the Seller - Jude from Ruby Jude

Judith Howker is a Mixed Media artist who has been at the Devonport Craft Market for the last few months. Following the birth of her daughter 5 years ago, her creative energy surged and Ruby Jude was the result.

Where did the name Ruby Jude come from?

Well, My name is Judith and I shortened it to Jude when I arrived in NZ and the Ruby, well, for thousands of years, the ruby has been considered one of the most valuable gemstones on Earth. It has everything a precious stone should have: magnificent colour, excellent hardness and outstanding brilliance. In addition to that, it is an extremely rare gemstone, especially in its finer qualities!!

What is your art or craft?

My art is play and playing with glue, paint scissors, pens, ink, paint, cutting out paper then more paper then gluing, maybe more paint don't forget the words........ ah yes the beautiful dance of mixed media art is just amazingly tactile, healing and incredibly fulfilling. As a mixed media artist I create my story, your story and our stories, present, past and future. The medium transcends barriers touching the soul with love and meaning like all other art can, this is why I am in love with this craft.

How did you start creating?

As a little girl I got lost using colour with the hugest felt tip collection ever. Making my days bright, sunny and light fed my wee little soul full of dreams and possibilities!!! Then I grew up got serious and tucked that part of me away. However the birth of my first little girl came with a key that unlocked my passion for colour and well here I am a big girl now living out my little girl dreams!

What inspires you?

Ah life, friendship, love, my children, the passion to colour my world. Having always lived by the ocean I feel that feeds a huge part of my creative ideas. Its colours,the movement, the sparkle when the suns out, soft sand under barefoot................freedom. Of course others artists, photography and a new site I have discovered called Pinintrest all play there part.

What is your favorite book?

Would have to be Sophie's World, a child's book on Philosophy and James and the Giant Preach which happened to ignite my desire to read!

And your favourite food?

New York Philly Burgers, just delish. I completed an exchange in the US when I was a teenager and alas I have never found them outside of the USA since!!

What do you make and what will people find at your stall on Sunday?

Fancy tutus, beautiful hair accessories and girly clothes.
I've been interested in fashion design since I was very young and used to spend hours making dresses for my barbie dolls. More recently though, I began indulging in my love for girly frills when we found out we were having a wee princess after two gorgeous boys.

What inspires you?

Gorgeous fabric, ribbon prints, buttons and blooms.

Down to the nitty gritty - tell us about your favourite Book and Food?
I barely have time for reading these days! So my current favourite is a children's book 'Shh Little Mouse' by Pamela Allen. My favourite food - It's a close tie between chocolate and ice cream.

The Ragdoll Princess is an interesting name - tell us about how you came up with it?
I really wanted a name with some contrast and I liked the way 'ragdoll' and 'princess' don't usually go together, but somehow fit beautifully.

There is a world of online inspiration - where do you draw your online inspiration from?

I love looking at the patterns on Etsy, especially Heidi and Finn.

When you are not at the Devonport Craft Market, where can people find your amazing creations?

I mainly sell through my facebook page or my Felt shop.

Meet the Seller - Marianne from Gretel's Gingerbread

If you have been coming to the Devonport Craft Market for a while you will have come across Marianne from Gretel's Gingerbread. Marianne has been making and selling her amazing Swiss German style gingerbread specialities and other European style goodies (with a Kiwi Twist) at the market for over a year.

Marianne grew up on a Heidi style farm in Switzerland which turned her into a person who wanted to make stuff!

Inspired, Marianne decided to do an apprenticeship as a pastry chef and completed it with success after 3 years. One qualified, Marianne worked as a pastry chef in the French speaking and in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland and then decided that she needed to learn English which brought her to the U.S.A as a nanny. Marianne's time as nanny inspired her to further her career by going back to school. After completing a business degree, she worked in the travel industry for 8 years where she was able to use her language skills.

Being a challenge driven person, Marianne decided to expand her horizon's and make a big move to New Zealand where she worked in sales and marketing before setting up Gretel's Gingerbread 4 years ago. Running Gretel's Gingerbread gives Marianne the opportunity to use her cooking skills together with her business and people skills to make her customers happy with her delectable treats.

Meet Sarah from Songbird Designs.

Sarah has been selling at the Devonport Craft Market since August 2009. Part of the Craft Market organising partnership, Sarah and Songbird Designs are now a part of the furniture! Read more about Sarah's inspirations and where it all began.

Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Sarah and I am and I make a range of things from hair accessories to jewellery to paper goods and stationary. All of my bits and pieces come with a vintage, floral, romantic feel.

How long have you been crafting and what is your first crafting memory or experience?

In some way or other I have been crafting since I was small however I have concentrated on craft and been selling it since 2005 or so with the activity and selling ramping up in 2008-2009.

My first memory of crafting was making cards (hand-drawn -no less!) to sell at my Mother’s 40^th Birthday party. I marched in to the party and demanded people come to my ‘stall’ which I had set up in the hall of our house. From memory I charged 2c a card – not many people left the hall without a card under their arm!

What inspires you?

So many things inspire me. Fabric colours and designs. Blogs. Art. Nature. You name it, I can draw inspiration from it! I am drawn to things with a retro, vintage, romantic look and feel.

What is your favourite blog / book and food?

I read heaps of blogs – Creature Comforts is a favourite as is Design Sponge, Decor 8, Daydream Lily… I could spend hours and hours looking at them.

Why buy handmade?

Because you know where its comes from, because you can often meet the person who made it, because it likely to be unique and special.

A little something you can do to help the people of CHC

The craft world is big on community. Last year after the September 4th Quake Feltaid raised funds by selling donated handmade goods through a donated online store on Felt.

This time, the earthquake was larger and so has been the response from the Craft community. Check out the press release we received today from Handmade for Christchurch for a way that you can contribute to the situation in CHC, you will also snag yourself something handmade. A number of Devonport Craft Market Sellers have contributed to this auction.

You may also want to check out L'il Magoolie (a number of Devonport Craft Market sellers have donated here) and Foxes Shop who are also running auctions with the proceeds going to CHC Oriented charities.

Crafty WAHM's supporting Christchurch

A group of craft loving friends have joined together in an effort to help the people of Christchurch following the devastating earthquake.

After a group of 20 women, many of them work at home mums, discussed a way that they could help raise money for Cantabrians in need, they came up with the idea of getting fellow WAHMs and craft loving people to donate quality, handmade goods to auction off on Trademe, where all funds would be donated to the Christchurch Woman's Refuge and The Salvation Army - the result was Handmade for Christchurch.

"A couple of our friends are from the Canterbury area and we sat there for hours waiting to hear if they were safe. We also really wanted to help out with the clean up, but as we can't leave our families, we thought this was a great idea" says Debs.

In less than 4 days, their Facebook page already has over 1000 likers and have had 200+ items, international and local donated to the cause.

"As time goes on, the donations are increasing and we would love to be able to raise as much as we can" says Kahlia.

Lydia says "We are all so overwhelmed and encouraged to see so many people wanting to join the cause, some items have come from as far as Ireland, Finland, Canada and the USA, and we have received donations ranging from RRP$4.99 - RRP$1999!".

"Trademe has been really supportive of the cause, agreeing to waive all auction fees and promote the auctions as much as possible" Nic says.

Devonport Christmas Festival this weekend

The Devonport Christmas Festival is on this weekend.

It starts at 11am with the Santa Parade followed by Dance in the Park which will run until 3pm.

A mini Devonport Craft Market will be held on the Windsor reserve. There are about 20 stalls set up for the day. This will be your last time to purchase from Craft Market sellers, in Devonport for 2010. Once again all of the profits from the Devonport Craft Market will go to the Devonport Community Co-ordinator for the running of a Children's Day event in 2011.

Meet Karin from Karin Jewellery.

Karin has become a regular feature at the market and her lovely jewellery pieces are always popular. Learn a little about the woman behind the art!

Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Karin and I make jewellery from vintage brass pieces and all kinds of beads, charms and pendants.

How long have you been crafting and what is your first crafting memory or experience?

I have done something like this pretty much since I could sit up. I've always been into making things, drawing, writing, building, sewing, you name it. My whole childhood is more or less one big crafty memory, but one thing that stands out is the three-story mansion I built out of cardboard boxes for my Barbie doll when I was about eight or nine. It had a working elevator (shoe box, string), an oven that opened (macaroni box), walk-in wardrobes, stables, and a music room with a guitar made from a match box, an ice-block stick and sewing cotton.

What inspires you?

It's so not an original answer, but I have to say nature inspires me. My favourite pieces from my own range are the leaves and acorns, and I love wood and semi-precious stone and coral and bone and all those sorts of things. I like clean, simple forms and bold colours (like my coral branch pendants) but also quirky vintage things, things with some history to them, as long as they're not too sweet – I like things that have a bit of an edge.

What is the crafting achievement you are most proud of?

I'm pretty stoked to be making money, to tell you the truth. I'm not quite at the stage where I could pack in the day job, but I'm very happy that people want the things I design and make enough to pay actual money for them.

What item from the craft, art and design world would you most like for Christmas?

Ooohhh... there's so much to choose from! I would love some sort of padded travelling sleeve for my Macbook, and I've been on the hunt for a new leather kiss-lock purse for some time. It's hard to find the right size.

What is your favourite blog / book and food?

My favourite books are the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'brian, alongside anything by Tove Jansson. I don't spend a huge amount of time reading blogs but I like Crafting an MBA, The Creative Empire and Etsy's Success blog. I have a LOT of favourite foods, but if I had to pick one it would have to be chocolate, in any form.

Why buy handmade?

I think it's important to have contact with the people who make the things you use and love, it reminds us of the true value of possessions. People have become used to paying ridiculously low prices for everything, but the things they're buying aren't really cheap – someone somewhere is paying for it, through low wages and crappy working conditions and unsustainable materials and wasted resources and polluting transport. This is no secret, but it's easy to disregard it because you've never met any of the people affected, they're on the other side of the world and speak a different language.

When you are not at The Devonport Craft Market where can people buy your things?

You can find me on Felt and Etsy (soon). I also sell in Texan Art Schools or email me.

I have people contacting me after almost every single Devonport Craft Market, and I love it – you shouldn't rush to buy anything. If you see something, and then find that you are still thinking about it a day or two later, that's when you know it's for you.

Meet the Seller - Kim Whalen from Kute Kiwi

Meet Kim Whalen and I am the artist and designer of all things Kute Kiwi.

Who are you and what do you do?

Wool is my passion. I create lots of different items and it is all mostly centered around wool. I make fashion accessories such as bow ties, necklaces, and funky glasses. I also make some home wares including pom pom flowers, pretty garlands, and original art. I also make lots of other random bits and bobs like my notebook sets.

How long have you been crafting and what is your first crafting memory or experience?

I have been crafting ever since I can remember. I guess my first crafty memory was when I was little on sunny days I used to group different colored crayons together in a small pile on the cement in my backyard and wait for them to melt all together. Then I was able to color in my coloring books with multi-colored crayons!

What inspires you?

Everything, I am very easily inspired! I gain inspiration by everything around me...from beautiful natural scenery and animals as well as films, music, books and photography. I find vintage design and fashion very interesting and this has a large influence on some of my work. I also love many historical periods especially the Georgian era! I also love to just wander craft stores or home stores and look at all the beautiful furniture or items I can possibly create something new with. Sitting in a park and people watching is inspiring as well, people are fascinating.

What is the crafting achievement you are most proud of?

Kute Kiwi collaborated with World (NZ’s top fashion house) for their 2011 Autumn/Winter Collection. Watching my bow ties, chain scarves and glasses walking down the run way last week at New Zealand Fashion Week was a proud moment. I cannot wait until next year when Kute Kiwi will be in World stores all over NZ and Australia

What item from the craft, art and design world would you most like for Christmas?

I am so in love with Dear Colleen’s "Skills to pay the bills" print!

What is your favourite blog / book and food?

I hate picking favourites…but If I had to just choose one blog it would probably be Design*Sponge. I love books too. I love science/ fantasy fiction novels and of course all the classics like Jane Austin. Oh and my favourite food is anything Mexican!

Why buy handmade?

Buying handmade means you’re buying something that is special, unique, one-of-a-kind, and made with care. That just doesn’t exist in the world of mass production. You’re also usually directly supporting an independent artist which I am a big fan of.

When you are not at The Devonport Craft Market where can people buy your things?

In honour of Snowplough - A Great Cat

We've been missing our little buddy, Snowplough, the Devonport Village cat a great deal and decided that we had to have a reminder of him. We purchased a beautiful print from Sandra Waine at the August market and donated it to the Devonport Community House, where our market is held each month, yesterday.

It was beautifully framed at a great discount by Peter Scott (another fan of Snowplough!) of Devonport Picture Framers. Thank you Peter! The little gold plaque was engraved in Takapuna. It reads "In Honour of Snowplough. A Great Cat. The Devonport Craft Market 2010." The lovely man on the engraving counter added two little paw prints after hearing about Snowplough.

Pam told us some hilarious stories about Snowplough's antics including coming in to the Community House one weekend to do some work and hearing someone upstairs. She was worried that someone was breaking in, but bravely snuck up the stairs only to discover the yoga instructor chasing Snowplough around the art studios trying to catch him to put him outside.

The picture of Snowplough will be proudly displayed in the Community House by the next market (September 5th). Do pop in and have a look if you are passing before then. Sandra has another Snowplough picture on display at the Depot Artspace just next door at the moment.

And we had an extra special visitor. Jesse came visiting with his autism assistance dog, Dylan. We were thrilled to be able to help with the fundraising needed to buy an assistance dog for Jesse last year. Unfortunately, Jesse's first dog, Doug, didn't work out but the new dog, Dylan has settled right in and is working out a treat. You can read about Jesse and his family's story here.

We are very sad to report that the wonderful Snowplough the cat is with us no longer.

Snowplough was a huge part of Devonport life. He was adopted by the Harcourts office and by the Depot Artspace (who had a catflap fitted for him so he could go in and out as he pleased!). He would do a daily tour of the village and spent a lot of time hanging around us at the Community House when the market was on. We have had lots of fun with him over the time the market has run. He has been unofficial market inspector and spent many a happy hour curled up on a chair with us at the Craft Socials. He would always be there to help us set up the market and there when we closed up.

Meet the Seller - Nicole from Sweet Surrender Cupcakes

Tell us a little about yourself – who are you? Where do you hail from?

My name is Nicole and I was born & raised in West-Berlin the very exciting, arty & now once again capital city of Germany. I crossed the big ocean via giant steel bird and set foot on Aotearoa in December 1996.

Tell us a little about what you make?

I make/create edible Artistry for the sophisticated & discerning customer. I have to say a little “toned down” for the markets but give me a special occasion and you’d be surprised what I can come up with.

I specialize nowadays on cupcakes (No they are NOT muffins!) small table cakes and small top tier cutting cakes as part of cupcake towers.

I love baking with liqueurs, champagne or port wine…needless to say I cater mainly for the “grownups”. I just absolutely love to decorate my little sweet creations in a less then ordinary way) lush & opulent appeals to me naturally. I also study Interior Decorating & Design, I am in my second year

Have you always been a cupcake maker?

No, not exactly…I started baking at the age of 4 with my beloved Grandmother (nope, not your typical Nan but a very flamboyant woman, read about our story on my website but I have been in the Industry for a long time. When I came to New Zealand I bought & hands on operated a Café-Bar-Restaurant on Ponsonby Road for 11 years (Café Logos formerly Expresso Love) it was one of the funkiest places in town. It was all about healthy and tasty Food & a (very) unusual stimulating atmosphere. I was baking up to 6 large cakes a day and heaps of vegan muffins, wholesaling my savoury pesto filled muffins to other cafes, making all soups for “SUJU”, making Birthday-Wedding & other Special Occasion cakes and being the head chef were only part of my daily tasks. Prior to that adventure I was trained & worked as a nurse for 17 years in Germany, mainly in Intensive Care Units, Organ Transplant Units, Operating Theatre, as a Head Nurse, Nurses Teacher & a few years at the second largest Psychiatric Clinic in Germany. Oh, and I was a chauffeur for a while in my life to a few posh business clients..that was great fun and I got to drive the most amazing and expensive cars one could imagine..once a Corvette Stingray with 24 Carat gold interior and mahogany dashboard....hilarious…

Your flavour combinations are amazing – where do you draw your inspiration from?

I have traveled a lot and have tasted the most amazing foods. I like unusual flavours and taste sensations and I just have to close my eyes, imagine a place or an event from my past or hear a certain music/look at a picture/ feel a beautiful fabric etc and voila - a new flavour combination pops right up in my head. I am an intuitive baker, I never follow recipes and my cupcakes are not made using a standard cupcake recipe. Once you understand how ingredients relate to one another it is (almost) “a piece of cake” to put it all together.

What is your favourite cupcake?

Ooohh..too many to pin me down on just one. My mud cake combinations are definitely in the top part of my fav list but at the moment I really like my “Marie Antoinette” - Black Doris Plum-Almonds & Pinot Noir.

Meet the Seller - Helene from Happy Go Knitty

Meet Helene Dehmer. Helene has had a stall at the market since the market opened last year. Famous for being able to ‘knit and walk’ at the same time, we thought you would like to find out a little about what makes this knit-a-holic tick!

Happy-go-knitty – where did you come up with the name?

I have just re-branded my knitted crafts and I'm very pleased with the name. I wanted a name that is fun and clearly describes what I'm doing. As a person I'm quite happy-go-lucky but most of all I'm happy-go-knitty!

Where did you learn your craft?

My nana taught me how to knit when I was 11 years old and I have knitted since.

I have always made things and have tried a lot of different crafts - sewing, knitting, tapestry, pottery, silver smithery, glass blowing, beading... Nowadays I stick to the knitting and I'm a knittaholic! I can walk and knit so a lot of my crafts are made walking to and from work!

What can people expect from Happy Go Knitty?

Various knitted things! I make knitted cuffs from NZ merino and alpaca. A few years ago I learned how to do beaded knitting so some of the cuffs are bead knitted. It's a traditional craft from the early 1800s. Wealthy women used to wear bead knitted cuffs to cover the edges of their worn-out dresses. Nowadays they are used as a warming and beautiful accessory.

I also hand-dye cotton yarn and make knitted kid's beanies. The yarn is soft and nice to wear and the colours are bright and beautiful! I also make knitted flowers from the cotton and put them on rings, brooches, hair clips and hair ties.

I recently dyed a big lot of cotton yarn so now I have my yarn for sale at the market.

There is one other thing that I do..... Some people might have noticed knitted graffiti around Devonport and I have to admit that I’m the person behind most of them (not all of them though). Where do you get inspiration from?

New ideas pop up in my head all the time. While working on one piece I'm already working on the next ten pieces in my head! I love colours and my big stash of yarns and beads is a big source of inspiration for me.

Your favourite books and food?

I really enjoyed the Millenium trilogy by Stieg Larson.

Mmmm, I like thai and indian food. And sushi. And Spanish tapas. And Italian food is yummy...

Do you find inspiration online?

I love my sister's blog, she is such a clever crafter.

Its taken me a while to get to this Meet the Seller but it is well worth the wait!

Read below to find out all about the brains behind the Devonport Craft Market and the brand Cotton Kiwi.

Introducing Sarah Bird

How did you come up with your stall name?

It was one of those 3am moments of inspiration. My stall was originally called TOTO (which means 'child' in Swahili) but I wanted something that was more catchy and reflected a little bit more on what I made. I googled the name and was amazed to find noone else was using it and relaunched as Cotton Kiwi last October.

How long have you been crafting?

Since I was little. My Mum is very creative. I grew up travelling the world with my parents and we often couldn't buy nice clothes where we lived. Mum would make all of our clothes and all of hers so I learned how to sew and knit by watching her.

What is your craft?

Sewing mainly with some knitting and the occasional bout of painting. I started off making childrens' applique t-shirts, bibs, aprons and soft toys (particularly sock monkeys and babysafe toys) but then branched out to include a few bits and pieces for adults. My most popular item is probably the Tape Measure Rose Brooches I make. I also make tea-towels appliqued with tea cups and cupcake and coffee cup pincushions which are made using felted sweaters.

How did you start creating?

As with many crafters out there, my Mum had me crafting from an early age. I was constantly getting in trouble for cutting great big holes out of the centre of expensive pieces of fabric to make a dolls outfit or messing up her embroidery threads and patterns. She was very supportive though and taught me a great deal (still does!). I was given my Nan's old sewing machine when I left home but rarely had the time to use it when I was living in London. Since having children, I've been inspired to make things for them and comments and requests from friends and families started the whole ball rolling. I've been actively crafting for about 2 years now and make time to learn as much as I can. There is so much information to be found online from fellow crafters and bloggers, it's really easy to pick up new skills.

What inspires you?

My children, my Mum, other bloggers, pictures, books and photographs from 1950s- 70s (I'm a big fan of retro and vintage items), old sewing patterns and seeing what other people are making all over the world online.

What is your favourite book?

I love sewing books by Emma Hardy. Her instructions are so easy to follow and are always beautifully photographed.

I have so many other favourite books but recently read The Time Travellers Wife and loved it. I seem to spend most of my time these days reading Milly Molly Mandy and Cat in the Hat stories!

What is your favourite food?

I do love sushi but most food is a hit with me if it eaten with friends or family and a few glasses of wine.

Meet the Seller - Lisa from Estella Rose

Lisa's label Estella Rose is new to the Market scene - but a welcome addition! Her bags are lovely - something for everyone. Learn a little bit about Lisa and her creations below.

How long have you been making and where did your shop name come from?
I have always been a sewer but have been selling my bags for only 3 months. Estella Rose is my youngest Daughters name, it was also my husbands grandmothers name.

What is it that you make?
My main thing is bags made from beautiful fabrics that I buy from America, I want to use fabrics that you don’t see in New Zealand so ‘Im constantly looking on the internet for websites I can buy unusual and different product from. I also sew purses and fabric brooches. I love to collect buttons and interesting bits from second-hand shops so I use these on my bags and brooches as well. I have an obsession with fabric and have a large stash of fabrics and buttons that I have always wanted to make something from.

What gives you inspiration?
I thought its always hard to find the perfect bag so I could make my own and once I started to buy fabrics I realised what I could actually create and it started from there. Usually I see a fabric design and I get inspired from there. Also customers give me a lot of inspiration because they are always telling me what they want in a bag, a bag is so personal and so I try to make them all different to hopefully suit all tastes.

Your favourite read?
I mostly read kids books these days! I have 2 girls. Each peach pear plum is a cool book. The last book I remember reading for myself was Slave by Mende Nazer

and your favourite guilty pleasure (the food kind!!)

I have a real sweet tooth so I would have to say chocolate but I do love pastries.

Online inspiration?

Meet the Seller - Jo from Infusions

Jo has been a Devonport Craft Market regular since the Market opened in May last year. A native of the Mother Land, Jo and her family have been living in NZ for the last 18mths. Her Kiln made the trek with her across the Ocean. She tells us a little about why glass infusion has her hooked.

How long have you been working with glass?
About 5 years. I'm a glass fuser. It involves using a kiln to heat glass to a very high temperature, melting layers together - and never being quite sure what the end product will look like. I work with art glass, but have an increasing interest in recycling bottles and other scrap glass into useable objects. I never mass produce as this would bore me rigid, and stifles creativity.

Tell us about the name Infusions.
The name 'Infusions' describes what I do perfectly. I'm merging different coloured and textured glasses together, sometimes with metal, to create a new complete object. Also, glass fusing is a real melding of both technical and artistic disciplines.

How did you start creating?
After having each of my two children, I had an overwhelming urge to try something new (and my husband encouraged me as I was driving him mad). After my first daughter, I went and hiked around China to raise money for a fostering charity, and after my second I went off to Brighton to work with a glass artist. From the first time I opened a kiln to reveal what was inside I was hooked. I've always loved the element of surprise.

What inspires you?
Everything. Colours, the sea, my children, flowers, the sky, but most of all my mood. If I'm not feeling creative, I don't fuse.

Tell us about your favourite book?
Hmm, a tough question as I read lots. Scar Tissue by Anthony Keidis (the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) is the most amazing account of a battle with addiction. Very raw and honest. I tend to favour books that demonstrate the power of a human to win through.

And food - tell us what food you can't live without?
Oh, I love food. Italian, Mexican, chocolate, mashed potato, Sunday roast, marmite (the British one), eggs, sushi, good cake, fresh bread, summer fruits - you get the picture. I really love food. I really couldn't pick one.

Aside from the Devonport Craft Market, where else can people buy your art? From my Felt store or come to my house, where you can have a look whilst I make you a cup of tea :)

A regular to the market scene and to Devonport Craft Market is Julie from Baby Love Merino. The sylish merino offerings make any parent squishy! Summer or winter you will find something for your kids from Julie's offerings.

What do you make and how long have you been making!
I have been sewing for 25 years. I sew beautiful Merino (and some cotton) baby, toddler and pre-school clothing. I had a beautiful little boy who needed a snuggly wrap...and then he grew and needed snuggly tees, and then more fashionable and contemporary clothing. Then I had another gorgeous boy, so I had to indulge my inner pink somewhere that wasn't on my own children!

What gives you inspiration and how does that translate into your designs?

The world around me - sometimes it is international cultures, sometimes it is architecture, sometimes it is the beauty of the NZ bush and sea. I'm never inspired by what is currently happening in kids fashion as I think it makes them too old too fast. I want my kids to be kids and look like kids - not teenagers or adults.

Favourite reads and favourite foods?

Too many! I loved a Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, but also Wild Swans. Recently I couldn't put down Mitch Ablom's new book. Runny poached eggs on some sort of rustic toast....eggs benedict - yum!

Favourite online inspiration?

I love to look at all the gorgeous things people are making around the world in babyology.com.au

And because I am into photography right now, I am very inspired by the work of my Baby Love photographer at photofever.co.nz

How long have you been an artist?

I'vebeen painting ever since I could hold a brush!

Tell us a little of what you create?

Paintingusing acrylics and mixed medias on canvas and board, as well as creating artblocks with prints from my original paintings. I also sell fine art prints frommy originals, gift cards, magnets, paper weights, luggage tags, and recycledbottle-cap earrings which feature a mini print from a variety of my originalworks.

How did you get started creating?

Iwas raised on a farm in Tennessee along with my parents and five sisters. Wegrew up without the modern forms of entertainment such as electricity,Television, radio, etc...instead we had our imaginations and the great outdoorsto inspire our creativity within...that is where it started for me.

What inspires you?

TheMaster Creator, My husband, My family, my day-dreams, and night visions...nature, and the beauty of life. I am also inspired by the old masters, therich, dark colour palettes, and the simple beauty of the life subjects theyused. My most recent work exploresmixed media portraits, with a reniassance-like feel that embodies a spiritualor expressive essence, revealing the emotion. TheDiary of Frida Kahlo (She is an artist whom I cherish!)

What is your favourite food?

Ilove real traditional ethnic foods... Thai food is amazing, and I think I couldlive on sushi!!

Favourite blog or inspiration site?

Iam finding so much inspiration lately from an amazing artist who I adore, MistyMawn. A couple years ago, my mother and I had the opportunity to participate inone of her classes at The Art and Soul retreat in Oregon, USA, and since then Ihave continued to follow her blog and work. Meet Sandra Waine. Devonport Craft Market regular since early 2009.

What is your craft?

Printmaking would have to be my number one interest as I have been doing lino cutsfor at least the last 10 years. The sewing has always something I have dabbled in and is lots of funwhen you create something a bit different and original. As for screen printing, which wassomething I have always wanted to do, last year I was lucky enough to learnthat skill by doing a community college course (along with both DCM Sarah's (Cotton Kiwi & Songbird Designs) andCat Taylor).

How did you get involved in print making?

Allthrough my life I have done various Art Courses and always been interested inthe arts. Once we moved back to NZI got together with my very creative Aunty, who is a print maker (woodblocks)and we entered art shows together. We even had an exhibition together at the Small Dog Gallery in the Depotback in 2007.

What gives you inspiration?

Lifemainly. Things just pop into my head.

Tell us about your favourite book?

Idon't have a particular "favourite" book but one of my favouriteauthors is Tim Winton

And your favourite food?

That'sa bit of a hard one Too many things to choose from. I am some what of a sweet tooth though!

Do you have a favourite blog or inspiration site?

Iam partial to cruise the "Clever Bastards" site, plus Felt ofcourse.

Craft Social Postponed

Craft Social is being postponed until Sunday 28th February due to both Sarah's being busy the evening of 21st Feb. At least now we all have an extra week to work on our swap goodies!

The swap theme is "Love". Make something using the theme and bring it along to Craft Social if you want to be involved in the swap. Please don't feel you have to.

Craft Social will be on Sunday 28th February, 7.00pm, Devonport Community House. All welcome. Tea/coffee/cake provided. $3 pp.

Craft Social is starting up again this Sunday (21st Feb) at the Community House, 32 Clarence St, Devonport from 7pm.
The theme for the swap this month is "Love". If you want to join in the swap, simply make something using the theme as inspiration and bring it along. Names will be drawn out of a hat and you will get to take home someone else's work.
All are very welcome. You don't need to be part of the craft market to join us.
The cost of $3 includes tea, coffee and cake.
