Meet Shariyah Garner from Yiyah's Gallery

How long have you been an artist?

I've been painting ever since I could hold a brush!           

Tell us a little of what you create?

Painting using acrylics and mixed medias on canvas and board, as well as creating art blocks with prints from my original paintings. I also sell fine art prints from my originals, gift cards, magnets, paper weights, luggage tags, and recycled bottle-cap earrings which feature a mini print from a variety of my original works.

How did you get started creating?

I was raised on a farm in Tennessee along with my parents and five sisters. We grew up without the modern forms of entertainment such as electricity, Television, radio, etc...instead we had our imaginations and the great outdoors to inspire our creativity within...that is where it started for me.

What inspires you?

The Master Creator, My husband, My family, my day-dreams, and night visions... nature, and the beauty of life. I am also inspired by the old masters, the rich, dark colour palettes, and the simple beauty of the life subjects they used.  My most recent work explores mixed media portraits, with a reniassance-like feel that embodies a spiritual or expressive essence, revealing the emotion.  The Diary of Frida Kahlo (She is an artist whom I cherish!)           

What is your favourite food?

I love real traditional ethnic foods... Thai food is amazing, and I think I could live on sushi!!           

Favourite blog or inspiration site?

I am finding so much inspiration lately from an amazing artist who I adore, Misty Mawn. A couple years ago, my mother and I had the opportunity to participate in one of her classes at The Art and Soul retreat in Oregon, USA, and since then I have continued to follow her blog and work. How did you come up with your stall name?

Yiyah is my nickname (and seems for some people easier to remember than my full name Shariyah) and my stall is where I showcase some of my original paintings, art work, and creations.

Meet the Seller - Sandra Waine

Meet Sandra Waine. Devonport Craft Market regular since early 2009.

What is your craft?

Print making would have to be my number one interest as I have been doing lino cuts for at least the last 10 years.  The sewing has always something I have dabbled in and is lots of fun when you create something a bit different and original.  As for screen printing, which was something I have always wanted to do, last year I was lucky enough to learn that skill by doing a community college course (along with both DCM Sarah's (Cotton Kiwi & Songbird Designs) and Cat Taylor).           

How did you get involved in print making?

All through my life I have done various Art Courses and always been interested in the arts.  Once we moved back to NZ I got together with my very creative Aunty, who is a print maker (wood blocks)and we entered art shows together.  We even had an exhibition together at the Small Dog Gallery in the Depot back in 2007.           

What gives you inspiration?

Life mainly. Things just pop into my head.           

Tell us about your favourite book?

I don't have a particular "favourite" book but one of my favourite authors is Tim Winton

.

 And your favourite food?

That's a bit of a hard one Too many things to choose from.  I am some what of a sweet tooth though!

Do you have a favourite blog or inspiration site?

I am partial to cruise the "Clever Bastards" site, plus Felt of course.           

Apart from The Devonport Craft Market, where can people buy your artwork?

I have a shop open on Felt.

Craft Social Postponed

Craft Social is being postponed until Sunday 28th February due to both Sarah's being busy the evening of 21st Feb.  At least now we all have an extra week to work on our swap goodies!

The swap theme is "Love". Make something using the theme and bring it along to Craft Social if you want to be involved in the swap. Please don't feel you have to.

Craft Social will be on Sunday 28th February, 7.00pm, Devonport Community House. All welcome. Tea/coffee/cake provided. $3 pp.

Craft Social

Craft Social is starting up again this Sunday (21st Feb) at the Community House, 32 Clarence St, Devonport from 7pm.
The theme for the swap this month is "Love". If you want to join in the swap, simply make something using the theme as inspiration and bring it along. Names will be drawn out of a hat and you will get to take home someone else's work.
All are very welcome. You don't need to be part of the craft market to join us.
The cost of $3 includes tea, coffee and cake.

Love Sweet Love - MARKET TOMORROW

Meet the Seller - Jennie from A Little Vintage

 

Meet the very talented and creative Jennie. Doll maker extrodinaire.  Jennie has become a regular at the Devonport Craft Market over the last few months, and we are thrilled to have her with us. 

Find out a little bit more about Jennie - you need to come and see her exquisite dolls in person!  

How long have you been involved in your craft?
I've been making the dolls for about a year.

What is your craft?

Mainly handpainted dolls. Some are custom made from childrens old baby clothes. Its a bit nerve-racking having to cut into something so special, I'm really appreciating the trust mums have in me! Some examples of orders I've had are: - Bride and groom - Identical twin girls - 40th birthday present made from the ladies 1970's toddler clothes - Lola doll from the childrens books 'Charlie & Lola - And a doll for a girl with Down's Syndrome, with features like her own. I also make different things like recycled LP record bowls, doily doorstops and various styles of cushions.

 

How did you get started creating? My daughters favourite toy(Gordon) needed re-stuffing, so her Dad went out and bought a HUGE bag of polyester filling. I had to do something with the rest of it!

What inspires you?
I liked the thought of original one-of-a-kind items. There was also the need to make something different but also affordable. Our children are extremely inspirational. With Greta(3) and Eva(8) at very different stages of childhood, I get some interesting viewpoints and opinions on what I am creating! The dolls were originally named Miss Greta and Miss Eva according to which hairstyle they had. And of course the real brains behind the softisaurus dinosaurs was really Greta!!

What is your favourite book?

I do love anything about travelling op-shoppers!

 What is your favourite food?
Everchanging, but at the moment feijoa ice-cream. Feijoas are a delicacy for me after being out of the country for so long! (13 years)

Favourite inspiration site; blog or online shop Though there are so many wonderful sites/blogs out there, I am finding its the fabric itself that leads me into creating. Especially if its had a previous life.

How did you come up with your stall / shop name?
As I am using new/recycled and vintage fabrics, I am using only 'a little vintage'. But also it refers to the dolls being little people mostly made from older/vintage fabrics.

Apart from The Devonport Craft Market, Where can people buy your work?
I usually have what is currently available on my blog. Artefact at the New Zealand Steel Gallery in Pukekohe, Craftworld in Westgate, Riverside Crafts in Helensville. Also various markets around Auckland.
