Meet the Seller - Heleen Webb -Ruby in the Dust

Heleen Webb of Ruby in the Dust is a regular at the Devonport Craft Market. She shares a little bit about what she does and her inspirations. You can see Heleen and her beautiful wares at the next Market on Sept 6th.

How long have you been involved in your craft

I've been selling my work for about a year and a half now.

What is your craft

My main products are brooches, pocket mirrors, covered buttons and zip pouches made with vintage embroidery; rebound Little Golden Books and vintage illustration stickers. I also make peg dolls, kids' dress-up tails and crowns, fabric bags and whatever takes my fancy at the time. I get bored if I make too much of the same thing, so there's usually something new on my table every month.

How did you get started creating

I come from a very practical, creative family and has always been interested in art, especially textile design. It's only in the last few years since I had my boys and became a stay-at-home mum that I've been able to indulge my hobbies of sewing, doll-making and general crafting.

What inspires you?

I am very easily inspired! It's usually the pattern or colour of a piece of fabric, good design, clever ideas, but always about beauty.

What is your favourite book

I love reading, but I don't make enough time for it. Some favourites: Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Birdsong, The Time Traveller's Wife, Where the Wild Things Are, Donna Hay's cookbooks.

What is your favourite food?

I love the simplicity and flavours of Middle-Eastern food; South African bobotie; orange and almond cake; my husband's homemade parlsey and sundried tomato pesto.

Favourite inspiration site / blog / online shop
For beautiful textile design: Ink and Spindle .
Danita Art's ethereal paintings and dolls.
Rob Ryan for delicate and meaningful papercuts.
Tiny Happy for inspiring thoughts on being a mum, crafter and combining the two.

Thanks for sharing Heleen. See you at the market!

Meet the Seller will become a regular feature on this blog so you can get some insights into the fabulous sellers we have at the Markets

Songbird

I am so excited to show you this month's poster by Sarah McLeod of Songbird Designs and her husband. They are very clever cookies! The Tui is my favourite NZ bird and being a big fan of Art Deco design too, this poster is close to perfect!Perfect timing too as Sarah is now official co-organiser of The Devonport Craft Market. Welcome Sarah!

Yay for wrong weather forecasts

Yes, the sun mostly shone and we had so much fun at the market today. Thank you for coming to see us, we enjoyed meeting you.

The Not So Faraway and Liberty Lane added plenty of lovely colour.

Sarah of TOTO enjoyed sending some of her monkeys off to lovely new homes.

Patricia of Pepa brought her beautiful felt earrings and mosaic mirrors along.

Hayley of Blankies and Trish of Fireworks Agnes drew lots of compliments from market visitors.

Young Harry Waine felt inspired to make his own felt pig. Very cool Harry!

Jane of Forget me not Vintage made me wish I had a bigger home so I could fit some of her lovely vintage furniture into it.

Krafty As had so many scrummy purses and other goodies.

The lovely ladies from Snapdragon brought along their divine little faery folk and gorgeous steiner inspired toys.

Helene joined us with her magical hand knitted cotton beanies and beautiful kids necklaces (and Hayley managed to sneak into another photo...)

See... the sun was shining! Here's Vanessa of Dragonflyz.

Beautiful Koru Spirals. I love these. Totally mesmerising. There were so many other fabulous stalls and stallholders. Those were just a few. Come down next time (6th September) and say hello!

Finally, here is Snowplow aka the craziest cat around. You'll no doubt see him around at one of the markets. He likes to join in by getting in people's cars, inspecting the tents and generally making sure everything is running smoothly. He wore himself out this time and found a comfy spot in the middle of everything and fell asleep. Wonderful life!

Baby its cold outside...

It's market day again this Sunday 2nd August! The weather is awful. Cold and wet and 'orrible but you know what? The market is a great place to go on wet days. We are mostly inside, we have GREAT cake and we all have a smile on our face. Why not come down and join us? Devonport Community House, 10-2. Bring your pennies because you are bound to find something you can't live without. See you there!

or we might have to send the monsters to fetch you ... :o)
