Meet the Seller - Glen van Prehn

Meet Glen van Prehn Devonport local and regular stall holder at the Devonport Craft Market. You will see Glen bust knitting her next creation while you shop!

Shop / stall name
Glennie's Beanies

How long have you been involved in your craft?
45 years

What is your craft?
Knitting . Specially beanies/berets but have lately started on baby beanie/bootee sets which look cute.

How did you get started creating?
When I first started knitting at 11 I simply followed patterns and bought the wool recommended in them but in the late 80's when those big patterned jumpers and coats came into fashion, I started playing around with different colours and textures and modifying patterns. I love colour. And it never ceases to amaze me that 2 simple little stitches can produce such incredibly different looks and garments.

What inspires you?
I was going to say nature but in fact it's everything! I love the weave in cloth, textiles, house interiors and Resene colours - anything really. I love putting colours next to each other that happen naturally in the garden but look like they should clash.

What is your favourite book?
Changes from month to month - loved reading The Friday Night Knitting Club!

What is your favourite food?
Is chocolate a food?
Favourite inspiration site; blog or online shop
I tend to use magazines rather than anything online for inspiration ....

How did you come up with your stall / shop name?
It sounds a bit better than Glennie Knitwit or something similar! Seriously, it's quite hard to come up with an original name involving knitting so I stuck to the basics.

Apart from The Devonport Craft Market, Where can people buy your work?
Directly from me or through Trade Me

Thanks Glen - Check out Glennie's Beanies at the next Devonport Craft Market, October 4th 10-3pm, Devonport Community House, Clarence St, Devonport.

The Sun, the Dads, the colour

What a glorious day it was on Sunday. The sun shone and shone and didn’t stop, which was lovely for buyers and sellers alike.

It was also Fathers Day and there were a great number of Dad’s who made there way with their families in tow to come and check out the markets.

Can we say, HOW STUNNING all of the stalls looked on Sunday. The colour and energy from the stall holders was amazing. There were loads of new products, everyone is going to a great amount of artistic effort to fill their stalls with new and exciting things for buyers.

It was great to see a range of new stallholders as well as the very supportive regulars.

Pickn’ Oakum entertained out the front – they always put on a great performance.

A big thanks to those who helped with the cake and coffee stall on Sunday. Wonderful volunteers manned the stall and the proceeds went towards Jesse’s quest for an Assistance Dog (http://www.jesse.org.nz/). Nearly $2000 was raised in a raffle of Devonport Craft Market goodies (thank you SO much to all of you who donated your wonderful wares) and Wanda of Ikes Emporium did an incredible job selling most of the raffle tickets. There were lots of others out there working hard to make it all work and a particularly big thank you goes out to all of you who bought raffle tickets. It will be absolutely wonderful to see Jesse out with Doug the Dog when he arrives in less than a fortnight.

October next and the countdown to Christmas begins!

Stay well, happy crafting and see you soon

Thank you

Thank you so much for all the amazing stallholders and entertainers who helped yesterday's market a success. It was wonderful to see all the new ideas and creations as well as the fab vintage items and I have to say that I spent quite a bit on things for me (and my family didn't miss out either). It is a dangerous place to be amongst all those wonderful things to buy.
Our buskers, Mark and Damon, played beautifully and I am looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.
Alice Lee of Alice in Balloon land was a roaring success with kids of all ages and and it was a delight to see those amazing balloon sculptures being proudly carried around the market by their new owners.
Thank you too to the customers who came along to the market from far and wide to buy gifts and treats. People were there shopping for wedding and birthday presents as well as things for themselves and their family. It was lovely to see some repeat customers. Its a testament to the quality of the items on sale that people are coming back for more.
The next market is Sunday 5th July. Watch this space for details of the stallholders for that market.

Sunshine forecast

I have to confess that I did a mini-victory dance when I saw the weather forecast last night (it was only a mini one because it was too cold to move much from under my blanket on the couch). Sunshine for Sunday... Yay! Don't forget to wrap up warm though as it is likely to be pretty cold.

I think the cold weather is proving inspiring some of our stallholders. I know several of our regular crafters have been busy coming up with new ideas and I'm looking forward to seeing them on the day. We also have several new stallholders attending, so the market will be full of exciting new finds.

We have two talented local musicians scheduled to play on Sunday: Mark Howden (who also runs Depot Sound) and Damon Birchfield who plays acoustic folk music. I'm really looking forward to hearing them perform and I will be saving some gold coins to pop in their hats. We also have a balloon artist, Alice Lee of Alice in Balloon Land who will be creating her fab balloon sculptures in the morning.

Do have a look at our photos and the list of stallholders. They stay up on the blog so if you need to contact anyone either click on the shop/entertainer name or email me and I will try to put you in touch.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
